— A crash was causing heavy backups on Interstate-40 in Durham on Monday.

The crash occurred in the westbound lanes around 7 a.m. near Exit 278 for N.C. Highway 55. Backups stretched for miles, from Fayetteville Road to N.C. Highway 147, and drivers were advised to avoid the area.

By 8 a.m., conditions were starting to improve as crews moved the cars from the road. Two lanes had reopened, but delays remained. The eastbound lanes appeared to be free from congestion, but onlooker delays were expected.

At 9:30 a.m., the westbound direction had reopened.

Sky 5 video showed an SUV and a sedan were involved in the crash along with two tractor trailers. No information was available on injuries.

WRAL Nia Harden recommended drivers on Interstate 40 West take Exit 276 to avoid the significant delays.
