I-40 eastbound crash near Smithfield causes miles-long delays

Interstate 40 was closed eastbound at Mile Marker 312 in Johnston County, near Smithfield at N.C. Highway 42, on Saturday afternoon for about an hour, causing backups that stretched for up to five miles.

Motorists coming from the Raleigh area and west were detoured off at Exit 309 (US-70 East) to US-70 East to I-95 South to re-access I-40.

Those driving toward Wake County from the east were frced to exit at NC-42 West, follow NC-42 West to NC-50 South, and continue to NC-210 East to re-access I-40.
