JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — State transportation officials said Wednesday that work on bridges and ramps at the Interstate 95/40 interchange in Johnston County won't start this week as planned because of delays caused by weather.

Penhall Co. of Los Angeles had planned to start work Wednesday night but the company informed officials at the North Carolina Department of Transportation that the $10.2 million project would need to be pushed back, the state agency said in a written statement.

The work includes improving the driving surface of the two bridges on I-40 that cross over I-95.

State transportation officials also said the contractor was expected to use a cost-effective process known as diamond grinding to smooth out the existing surface of the concrete. The workers are also repairing any cracks and pot holes on the road.

If the work had go on as planned, one lane in each direction of I-40 would have been shut down near Exit 328 in Johnston County. And some ramps would have been closed to traffic during the overnight hours.

State authorities did not say when the I-40 and I-95 work would begin, although the entire project is scheduled to be complete by next summer.
