RALEIGH, N.C. — Police closed westbound lanes of Interstate 40 Monday just after noon, triggering a backup that extended for miles from the area of Raleigh-Durham International Airport toward Wade Avenue in Raleigh.

Both lanes of Aviation Parkway were also closed.

By 12:45 p.m., the lanes were reopened after, according to a spokesman for the Town of Morrisville, a person in distress was taken to safety from the bridge.

Westbound lanes remained at a standstill, while eastbound traffic was getting through a few vehicles at a time.
