FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Stephen Addison, who was killed Monday during a road rage shooting in Fayetteville, is remembered by friends and family as a loving, kind soul.

"Stephen was a great guy," said his wife, Justina Hemphill. "People always say someone lit up a room. My husband lit up every room he went into."

Addison was shot and killed while riding his motorcycle at the intersection of Skibo and Cliffdale roads. 51-year-old Roger Nobles was charged with first-degree murder in his death.

Addison was a former Fort Bragg solider who lives only blocks away from where he died.

Friends said Addison was a father to three children and had a "great, loving soul."

"[He was] a loving, caring guy for anybody. He stayed out the way [and] was never in anybody's business," said Justin Cockrell, a friend of Addison's.

Cockrell described Addison as well-known and loved in the Fayetteville community.

"There won't be one bad word spoken about Stephen," he added.

Cockrell said that he felt that he'd lost his friend "for nothing."

"It's just senseless. It's 2022, and we're still talking about road rage, I mean, come on. I lost my brother, for what?" he said.

The tragedy has brought Hemphill and Addison's ex-wife, Liz Orbles, closer together.

"As soon as your son walked away, you killed my kid's father," Orbles said about Nobles. "Now he's not here."

As the families placed flowers and pictures at the intersection where Addison died, they wonder how a road rage incident turned into murder.

"Who could do that, just kill somebody and just continue on with life?" Hemphill said, through tears. "You didn't just do that."

Cumberland County District Attorney Billy West told WRAL News he was looking at all possible charges against Roger Dale Nobles, including hate crime charges. He said he'll weigh the evidence and do more interviews before making that decision.
