SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Open your medicine cabinet and you will find items many take for granted.

But for others, those common over-the-counter medicines are just too expensive.

The line stretched down the hall to a room in Smithfield where volunteers packed bags with cold medicine, pain relievers, vitamins – and other over-the-counter pharmacy items.

And it is all free.

“This is a blessing to the community,” said Anzolia Stancil who attended the giveaway. “Anything that can help, will help.”

It costs more to get by right now. That means – at times – tough decisions must be made.

“Between food and medication, you can hardly make it if you have to pay for it,” said Stancil.

Connie Creech was also at the medicine giveaway Saturday.

“You know, income is limited now,” said Creech. “Some days you feel like you might want to take a Tylenol for a headache, you just don’t.”

Elwanda Hyman-Farrow is with the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Psi Omega chapter, an organizer of the event with help from NC MedAssist and other partners.

“We have loved doing this for our community,” said Hyman-Farrow. “We didn't start until 9 a.m., but I had over 30 people in line at 6 a.m. when I walked in the door.”

It was confirmation they were providing a lifeline that people really need.

“This is a wonderful service in our community they are offering,” said Creech.
