Power restored for thousands of Durham residents after car crashes, snaps power line in half on South Roxboro Street

DURHAM, N.C. — Power has been restored Saturday evening for thousands of Durham residents after a car crashed into a utility pole on South Roxboro Street.

On Saturday morning, the Duke Energy outage map indicated that more than 3,600 people in Durham were without power.

At 10 a.m., Duke Energy's website said the expected time of restoration was 2:30 p.m. Saturday. However the time of restoration ws pushed to 8:30 p.m. for most residents.

It appears that the utility pole snapped in half, with the bottom half of the pole almost touching the ground.

The Durham Police Department posted on Twitter that South Roxboro Street will be closed from Charles Street to Cornwallis Road until further notice because a vehicle struck a utility pole and crews are working to make repairs.

Durham police were on scene, blocking off the road as crews work to make repairs.

A green car was towed from the scene of the crash.

Police did advised drivers to find an alternative route.
