Track & Field: 4A State Championship (Feb. 9, 2019)

The second-annual HighSchoolOT boysindoor track & field all-state team and final top 25 rankings listed below were led by Western Guilford. The Hornets took the top spot and had four all-state selections.

Boys Indoor Track & Field All-State Team

The indoor track & field team lists two athletes for each event for first team and two for second team, all based on either N.C. High School Athletic Association championship performance or the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association invitational, which functions as the unofficial championship.

In some events, there were ties across different classifications. In order to determine the points, the tiebreaker was podium placement (a 1A champ got the higher spot if tied with the second-place athlete in 4A).

If the athletes were still tied, they were each given a spot on the all-state team. On this year's team, two runners in the 55 meter dash tied for the final spot on the second team.

Eight different athletes made it in two events: Weddington's Caden Townshend, North Raleigh Christian's Walker Norris, Southwest Guilford's Christian Parker, Porter Ridge's Jacob Laney, Western Guilford's Jordan Good, Jordan's Jordan Polk, East Burke's Kenneth Byrd, and Providence Day's Landon Roemer.

Byrd and Laney each have four all-state selections over the last two years while Townshend has three. Those with two include Norris, Parker, Good, Polk, Roemer, West Forsyth's Tyson Adams, Millbrook's Max DeAngelo, Swain County's Matthew Gray, Western Guilford's Javariante Core, and A.L. Brown's Daunte Marshall.

*tie for final spot

Final Statewide Top 25

For the first time in any sport, Western Guilford takes the top spot in the HSOT rankings.

The Hornets were actually runner-up in the 4A championship to Cuthbertson, but final rankings are calculated by lumping all finals performances from the N.C. High School Athletic Association championships and N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association invitational into one "super meet."

In some events, there were ties across different classifications. In order to determine the points, the tiebreaker was podium placement (a 1A champ got the higher spot if tied with the second-place athlete in 4A). If the athletes were still tied, points were evenly divided among them.

On the boys' side, 3A champ Franklin was unranked while 1A/2A champ East Burke was tied for 12th. Providence Day, the NCISAA invitational champ, was tied for ninth.

Western Guilford was unranked last year. Porter Ridge, Mount Tabor, Cuthbertson, and Weddington were all top-10 for the second year in a row.

  1. Western Guilford 41
  2. Porter Ridge 30
  3. Cuthbertson 28 (4A champ)

  5. Mount Tabor 23

  7. Jordan 20
  8. North Raleigh Christian 18
