Impaired driving crashes tend to skyrocket in the 12-hour period straddling midnight on New Year’s Eve.

There are 71% more crashes involving alcohol and drugs than the average weekend night, according to SafeAuto.com.

Last year, alcohol was a factor in 22% of traffic fatalities in the state, according to data from the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Law enforcement patrols are on high alert for impaired drivers with a “booze it or lose it” campaign that expands efforts to curb drunk driving during the holiday season. Consequences can be far worse than a DWI.

In December, Talama Cooper spoke with WRAL News about the loss of her friend Netanya Richardson and Richardson’s 3-year-old son Andre Dunn.

"Stay home if you’re drunk,” Talama Cooper said. “Stay home if you’re high, so other people can still see their loved ones."

During New Year’s celebrations, law enforcement officials are looking for drivers who are swerving and weaving.

Law enforcement agencies across the state are urging people not to drive under influence. Agencies like the Durham Police Department are encouraging people to designate a sober driver before drinking begins. Using a ride-sharing service or public transportation is also encouraged.

Uber

WRAL News reached out to Uber to ask if the company would have any promotions for central North Carolina but did not hear back.

However, Uber posted on social media that riders can share their trips with a loved one for safety.

In the Uber app, open the settings, select “Manage Trusted Contacts” and choose a contact.

Then, share by tapping “Share Trip Status” in the safety tool kit.

Lyft

Lyft is not offering any special discounts or promotions during New Year’s Eve.

However, the company recommends riders look for future promotions by:

  • View available offers on the “Notifications” tab in the Lyft app
  • Purchase available memberships or Ride Passes on the “Notifications" tab
  • Look out for offers sent to your email address
  • Earn ride credits by referring friends on the “Free Rides” tab in the Lyft app

GoRaleigh

GoRaleigh will operate a normal schedule on New Year's Eve, Monday, Dec. 31.

On New Year's Day, Tuesday, Jan. 1, GoRaleigh operates on a weekend schedule, with last departures from GoRaleigh Station at 10 p.m.
