CARY, N.C. — On Wednesday, a Chinese man and an Iranian man were attacked on a Cary greenway trail.

Some believe the attacks were racially motivated but Cary police said that's not the case.

"How is that it is OK for him to assault someone and not face any consequences?" said the daughter of the Chinese man, who does not want to be identified for safety reasons.

The victims said the man threw punches and yelled at them around 11 a.m. on the White Oak Creek Greenway.

The daughter of the Chinese man witnessed what happened.

During the attack, she said her father was hit in the head with an object and the man yelled to "go back."

Cary police said race and ethnicity were not a factor in the attack.

"They labeled this mental illness from the get-go and had dismissed it," said the daughter.

Cary police said the man was "in a mental health crisis" and will not be charged with a crime.

"I truly don't know what would have been the best way to handle it," said the daughter.

Either way, she added that the end result is the same for her.

"When it comes to emotional scars, it will be difficult for me to ever feel comfortable walking outside -- especially alone."

Police have not released the name of the man in photos that circulated earlier this week.
