CLAYTON, N.C. — Crews battled a house fire Sunday afternoon after smoke could be seen coming through the roof of a Clayton home.

By 2 p.m., crews were still on the scene on Walker Woods Lane, spraying the smoking house with water. The charred roof could be seen caving in at multiple places.

According to neighbors who live across the street, a middle-aged couple lives in the house but they were not home at the time, they had just left to go to the gas station. Another neighbor called the couple to tell them their house was on fire.
