RALEIGH, N.C. — The heat is back, and the week will stay steamy and hot.

"It is steamy all across the viewing area, and we don't really have a break in sight," WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

According to Gardner, dew points will be in the low 70s for Monday, making the air feel thick and heavy. The words "miserable" and "oppressive" were both used by meteorologists to describe how the heat will feel.

Gardner said highs will be in the low 90s Monday afternoon, but the heat index will make it feel like temperatures are in the mid to upper 90s.

There is a level 1 risk for severe weather for counties west of the Triangle on Monday evening, with damaging winds, lightning and heavy rain possible.

The system could bring some scattered storms and rain to the Triangle after dinnertime, but any activity will not be severe.

Severe weather

Like Monday, the rest of the week will consist of hot, muggy afternoons in the low to mid 90s.

Tuesday and Wednesday will also be uncomfortably steamy, with dew points in the upper 60s.

As is typical for summer, each afternoon will feature a small chance for showers and storms, but that chance is low, and the bigger story will be the heat and humidity.

Each day will be partly cloudy, and the chance for rain never rises above 20 percent.

7-Day Forecast

Since the weekend looks just as hot and muggy, there will be little relief from the intense heat all week.
