Hope Mills man shot to death; detectives seek shooter

Cumberland County sheriff’s detectives on Tuesday were searching for a heavy-set black man with dreadlocks who is wanted in the shooting death of a 25-year-old Hope Mills man.

HOPE MILLS, N.C. — Cumberland County sheriff’s detectives on Tuesday were searching for a heavy-set black man with dreadlocks who is wanted in the shooting death of a 25-year-old Hope Mills man.

Authorities said they believe the unknown man shot and killed Matthew Scott at Scott's house, 5813 Ajax Drive, shortly after midnight. A woman who was inside the house at the time told authorities she heard a struggle and then a loud, popping noise.

A helicopter airlifted Scott to Chapel Hill, where he died around 4 a.m., officials said. Details of his injuries were not available.

Detectives did not have a better description of the shooter. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office at 910-323-1500.
