HOMEWOOD, AL — Homewood Police is working with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency to investigate a shooting involving one of Homewood's officers. The officer was shot in the leg, and one of the suspected offenders is dead.

The Homewood Police Department says two officers were on an extra patrol around 1:30 a.m. because of an increase in vehicle burglaries. They noticed two vehicles parked in the parking lot of an appliance store on State Farm Parkway. The officers say the trunk on one of the vehicles was open and three people were standing around them.

Investigators say the officers then tried to talk to the people. One of them ran away, and both officers ran after them. The officers tried to use their tasers, but they had no affect. The report says the man then got out a handgun and fired multiple shots at one of the officers. At least one of those shots hit the officer in the upper thigh. Both officers then returned fire.

The person, still unidentified, died at the scene.

Paramedics took the officer to the hospital in serious condition, but is expected to make a full recovery.

The other two people the officers noticed at the vehicles were taken into custody for questioning.
