FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A homeless Fayetteville man was arrested after police say he robbed a woman, stole her car and led officers on a chase Saturday afternoon.

Christopher McMillan, 42, walked up behind a woman as she was getting in her car outside a Jersey's Mikes restaurant on Boone Trail Road, according to police.

He was armed with a knife and demanded money, police said.  He then took off in her 2005 Hyundai sedan.

Police spotted the Hyundai and chased it down U.S. Highway 301 toward downtown Fayetteville. The chase ended when McMillan crashed the car into an abandoned house on Maloney Avenue, police said.

McMillan was arrested at the crash scene.

He was being held Sunday in Cumberland County Jail under a $60,000 secured bond. His first court appearance was set for Monday.

According to North Carolina Department of Correction records, McMillan has felony convictions in Arizona, Kentucky and North Carolina. He was convicted on two counts of armed robbery in Arizona in 2001 and of common-law robbery in Cumberland County in 1996. His felony conviction in Kentucky dates from 1992.
