Meteorologist Amy Wyth in the WREL Severe Weather Center. We continue to monitor Hurricane Erin. It doesn't do a whole lot around central parts of North Carolina. It picks up the breeze a little bit through the day on Thursday. Other than that, the bigger impacts will be more confined to the North Carolina coast, especially the Outer Banks as we progress through the day on Thursday. Pretty comfortable around here overnight tonight. Temperatures will fall into the upper 60s and lower 70s under partly cloudy skies. We'll get down to about 71 in Raleigh and Rocky Mount, 72 in Fayetteville, 70 for the overnight low in Durham. It is going to be a little bit breezy tomorrow. We'll have winds gusting up to about 20 to 25 MPH in the triangle, but we could see winds gusts 30. a little bit higher than that along the I-95 corridor as you get closer to the coast. But it shouldn't be a big deal for us as we head through the day tomorrow, just a little bit of a breeze out there. And looking ahead to tomorrow, the temperatures stay rather comfortable. We'll start with temperatures in the low 70s in the morning. It should stay dry through the day tomorrow. We'll be breezy with high temperatures in the low to mid 80s.

Raleigh police Lieutenant David Davis addresses road closures in southwest Raleigh following reports of an assault on Solar Drive on Wednesday afternoon. 

Because if I needed to move it on that side, OK. All right, so I'm Lieutenant David Davis, the Raleigh Police Department's Public Affairs office. That's D A V I D D A V I S. I'm here to brief you on the situation that's been unfolding. So today at approximately 2:24 p.m., officers attempted to detain a subject at 400 Solar Drive in connection with an earlier assault on law enforcement personnel. As officers approached, the subject fled on foot and was able to steal a nearby pickup truck. The suspect continued to evade officers in the stolen vehicle. Raleigh police initiated a vehicle pursuit. During the course of the pursuit, the suspect collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Yonkers Road and Raleigh Boulevard. Fortunately, no injuries are to be reported from that crash. The pursuit continued and ultimately concluded near 600 Corporate Center Drive. Where the subject abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers pursued the individual southbound across Hillsborough Street to Spice Ridge Lane. The pursuit led officers to a residence off Bashford Road. The area is currently being secured as officers continue their efforts to take the individual into custody. The subject is believed to be responsible for an earlier incident on August 16, 2025 at approximately 3:34 a.m. where a subject rammed a police vehicle with a pickup truck and then fled the scene. That incident occurred at 5312 Thistlebrook Court. The individual connection with the investigation that is currently ongoing has outstanding warrants for assault by strangulation, injury to personal property, and injury and attempted larceny. Now, once, once we have more of an update, I do plan on doing another follow up just so you guys are aware of that. Um, I will try to take whatever questions I can. Obviously there's still a lot that's unfolding. If you could tell us from that earlier today. this person know that you were looking for him or her at this time or? So I don't have that information. I don't know if that subject knew that we were looking for him. There was not that investigation was clearly ongoing. It led us to today, but no, I don't know what information that that subject would have known about it. That's what the assault was the ramming of the police vehicle. We saw one person placed in handcuffs. The person or is that someone else? I don't have that information. I would have to follow up as soon as somebody is taken into custody though. I promise we're going to make sure that the that the media as well as our community members know. So is this a barricade situation is a suspect held up in a house anywhere right now? So we are still actively trying to locate the subject, which is going to take the entire perimeter. But you believe that he's somewhere. No, we are not going to be releasing his information until we have positively identified him and taken him into custody. Just reaction on that initial assault. I mean it's awful. I mean the officers were being very proactive. I believe the subject was breaking into vehicles is what the reported incident was. Officers are doing their job. They went out there to try to locate that subject and he fled and unfortunately, you know, our officers were not seriously injured. I don't have that information at this time. So right now we do have the situation contained, right? If anything does change, we will we will begin an evacuation process. We're not at that point right now. Can you just talk to me about the response here who is here assisting or if anybody and we heard something that sounded like a public address system. I don't, I don't know about the public address system going off. I haven't heard about that. We did have our partners in law enforcement help us out today. We do want to thank WakeSO for assisting us as well as SHP. But right now it's just solely the Raleigh Police Department. There might be a couple the agencies might have a couple of units that are still here, but mostly it's just the Raleigh police chased or exceeded 100 No, not until the after action report. I'd be able to confirm that. I don't want to speculate on how fast that they that they reached. Well, I mean high speed could be anything when you're traveling down the interstate or even a secondary road, right? So the speed limits are what they are and if they go above those speed limits, then yes, it would be a high speed. Another person was hit in this change. How dangerous. Yeah Right, no, it's very important that you know anybody that tries to flee from the police, obviously we want them to stop. We don't want to injure the, uh, we don't want to have the opportunity where one of our community members is going to get injured. That's a high priority of ours. Several officers were already involved in that, so we were able to determine pretty quickly that that individual that was hit today was not injured, so we were very fortunate about that. It What Yeah, so when officers tried to try to detain this individual, clearly he must have known that, you know, law enforcement was looking for me, so he fled, and that during that scuffle, that encounter, I'm sure that's where the radio traffic that you may have heard come out as that. If you could speak to the response here, I mean it's just a lot of resources and it takes you guys. Oh, so, so we, we have a lot of resources. We have this whole special operations division dedicated for instances just like this. So our field operations division is still out there answering 911 calls, so I would not be worried about that. initially keyed into the solar drive scene where the suspect was located? I'm not going to know that there's investigations that are ongoing and there's different things and different tools that they use. I'm not I'm not going to go into that right now. That's going to be it for right now, guys. I will have an update as soon as I can get one out. I promise you on that. All right, so thank you again. UNC football coach Bill Belichick gives an update on his team's progress in fall camp. The Tar Heels begin the season on Sept. 1 against TCU in Chapel Hill. 

<p>Afternoon. How are we doing? All right. Well, we're, uh, kind of grinding through the last week of camp here. We've got, uh, Uh, some practices this week and then, uh, then obviously the preparations for TCU. So it's kind of our last chance to really nail down, um, you know, the fundamentals and some of the pillars that would take us through the season, um, both individually and, uh, individual fundamentals and also, you know, some, some foundational things, um, offensively, defensively in the kicking game that will come up, you know, probably in every game or, or elements in every game. So, um. Hopefully get a little bit of heat this week. Looks like it's starting to warm up. That's good. Um, and. This kind of the last week of training camp here, we'll, we'll merge into, um, you know, game preparations here, um, starting next week, uh, but we're just kind of getting through the final stages of our, um, training camp preparations for the season. We start in the back middle. Hey Bill, uh, Freddie Mars yeah but I just students back on campus finally, less than 2 weeks out, how would you sort of less the excitement around the program now that you guys are so close there's actually gonna be games this weekend? Yeah, well, I mean, excitement for us is honestly every day, you know, our meetings, our practices, our opportunity to, to get better and improve things, um, uh, with training camp ending and classes starting, we're on a different schedule, practicing in the afternoon and so forth. So, um, we have a little less time with the players, a little different schedule, but, um, trying to make the most of that time. We're on the, um, you know, 20 hour rule now, uh, different than training camp, so. Um, you know, it's, it's a little adjustment, but we're still, uh, we're ready for it. It's time to, time to get into preparation for games and start playing games here, you know, in less than 2 weeks. Thanks. Front row on the left. Adam Smith in South Carolina, um, just wanna ask with as you're talking about shifting gears into game prep mode next week because that first game is on a Monday and then you turn around and you got like 5 days to the second game like when you get into next week, is are there challenges in terms of the actual game prep where it's not a normal week leading up to a Saturday? Is it how do you, how do you think you try to navigate that? Um, well, it'll be similar to what we had in the NFL, where we had Sunday and Thursday games. Um, every team in the NFL had a Thursday game. Uh, so, um, that goes all the way back to some Thanksgiving games. Um, really at the beginning of my career, we had those. So that Sunday to Thursday is, um, you know, it's a quick turnaround. Um, it happens one time, so, uh, that'll be a little bit different than all the rest of the weeks, but, um. Yeah, we'll try to, you know, make the most of that opportunity and in compliance with uh our time constraints and, and rules and travel and so forth, um, but it is what it is. Uh, we, we've talked about it, we planned for it, but we're not worried about it right now. We'll deal with that when we get to it. Um, you know, the Monday night game is, is, uh, since it's the opening game, it doesn't really, we just pretend like it's a Saturday game and pack everything back, um. On a daily basis to make Monday look like Saturday. It, it'll be the next short week that'll, that'll have a bigger adjustment. Thanks. Andrew to start on 24/7. We learn from both life experience. chance to feel lock Uh, it's, it's really all about fundamentals. It's, it's all about fundamentals. Um, there are times when we do things well and they look good, and then there's times when we fundamentally don't do things well and they don't look good. And so it's really about consistency, footwork, and, um. Especially on the offensive line, all 5 guys seeing the game, uh, kind of through one set of eyes, um, all recognizing what the front is, what our adjustments are on the blocking schemes, and how the 5 of us are going to block, uh, 5 opponents or, or 6 in pass protection if there's a dual on or something like that. Um, but make sure that all 5 of us stay the same way because if one of us is off, then that's, you know, it's a problem. So, um, but the little things, the fundamentals, the footwork, the hand placement, the. Um, you know, the blocking techniques, uh, and defensively, uh, you know, defeating one on one blocks, defeating double team blocks, defeating combination blocks, uh, as well as transitioning from the running game to pass rush and play action passes, and then our pass rush on third down a lot of different skills that need to be, um. Uh, worked on in pads in competitive contact situations that we weren't able to do and so we're making progress on all those, but when, when you look at it, it's, it's a, it's a decent amount and then we start adding pass rush games and run stunts where multiple people are involved in in uh movement on the defensive line again, it involves more than just my technique. It also involves collectively two or three of us working together on, on different stunts and so forth, so um. You know, it's more to work on that we have time to work on. Um, we're moving ahead with it. Um, you know, like everybody else, if, if you, we had 6 weeks to prepare, we could use all 6, but we don't. Uh, we'll take the time that we have and, you know, we'll be ready to go and go on from there. You said That's where you You Yes. Well, as I said, it's, it's very much of a work in progress, um, but we know a lot more than we did for sure, a lot more, but, uh, we still have a long way to go and, and players are improving and we'll just see what the rates of improvement are, you know, some guys are, are maybe improving at this kind of rate and other guys here and then there's a talent level and then it's how players work together. Um, it's not necessarily, um. You know, These 5 players individually, it's what 5 players collectively uh function together the best and and some of that involves communication and adjustments and so forth and so, um, again, we're just trying to find not only the best players but ultimately the best offensive line combination that works, um, and so, you know, we've also moved some players around a little bit so that. Um, you know, centers and guards, a little bit of guard and tackle, swing tackles, uh, again, just to try to make sure that we give everybody an opportunity, but at the same time not make it too confusing or, um, you know, too much of a, you know, mental gymnastics. I want to play aggressively, but, uh, the flexibility would help them both in their career and also in their understanding of what other players are doing on the same play, which will hopefully help them play better, so. So, you know, a combination of those things. Mhm. Right. You know, nice to meet you. Um, Alex Taylor is meeting with us today. What did you see out of him this fall? Where have you seen him grow the most? Um, well, again, I've only seen him since the spring, right? I mean I wasn't here with him last year, but, um, smart guy, very dependable, uh, can play multiple positions, um, you know, has been productive in, in multiple areas, uh, you know, down the field as a route runner, um, and making adjustments in the passing game based on, you know, rolled coverage, off coverage, press coverage, things like that. So he's one of the, one of the players that the quarterbacks have a lot of confidence and trust in. That he's earned, uh, through, you know, making good decisions and, and being dependable over, you know, multiple days, weeks, and, and, and routes. So, um, you know, glad we have them, but really like the versatility it brings he can line up in a couple of different spots for us and, and that helps you, uh, formationally. Mhm. Middle but little Aaron of the AP. You check your, your career, you check them almost every box of championships and so forth. You've done a lot of things, a lot of people would have said, I'm good with this, but you're still here, you're on ground zero building the college program for the first time. What is it that you think that keeps you as hooked to the sport, to building a team, to preparing for a game? What do you think is, is the most, the part that has you the most? Yeah, really, I think all of it. I mean, I enjoy all of it. Um, I enjoy the, the bringing players onto the team, whether that's recruiting or transfer or scouting those players, uh, evaluating them. Um, I enjoy the team building, um, you know, bringing the team together, seeing these guys come together and learn how to become a team, uh, the strategy, the X's and O's and, and the competition of it. Um, it's a great conference. There's a lot of great players and teams in this conference, great coaches. Um, had an opportunity to spend some time with them in a couple of different, um, you know, ACC functions, and, um, you know, guys like Billy O'Brien that are, you know, great coaches, Dabo, um, a ton of respect for them and the programs they run. So, um, I, uh, you know, I enjoy all of it and, um, and hope that I can help our players and our, our coaches and our team perform. Uh, well, by doing my job and, you know, giving leadership to the program. As a quick follow, is it, is it much of a different vibe than going through building a team in the NFL level? I mean, is it, is it football is football, or does it feel different at the college level in that regard? Well, I mean, it's definitely different. Uh, the dynamics are different. Um, once you actually have the players, I mean, that's, I would say more similar, um, but you know, Mike Lombardi, Mike's got a ton of experience doing this. He's been great to work with. Um, he's got a good staff. We have a lot of people who have experiences either with us or, um, similar to the way we want to try to do things and, and build the program, and that's been really helpful, um. But the actual, you know, coaching the players, that's the coaching part of it when you talk about building a program, you know, that's very much of a collaborative effort between, uh, the scouting and recruiting department and the coaching staff and, and, and the support staff as well for for trying to bring things together. So, um, you know, training is a big part of that with Moses and his staff, um, it's a lot of team building that goes on there. There's a lot of team development and improvement that goes on there, so. You know, are the players as strong or as fast as they are when they're 23, 24, 26 years old, uh, probably not, but I would say the rate of improvement is a lot higher here. We've seen a lot more growth and improvement than what we would in the NFL in terms of, you know, percentages and, and, um, and, and the raw numbers, you know, maybe not quite to the, the heights, but the, the rate of improvement and the, and the growth percentage wise has been. Um, much greater than what we ever saw in the NFL, so, you know, you. You know that you're helping the players improve and they see themselves improving and generally speaking, they want to work harder so they can see more of it. So it's been very refreshing and and that's fine we'll see what we do on the field, but that's, you know, we're coming along there too. We'll see how it turns out. Michael E of the Carolina Sports Network, what are the challenges that you have in building cohesion with your offensive line in such a compressed amount of time and as a, as a side to that, is there any adjustment that needs to be made to a coach with your offensive linemen based on whether they have a left-handed or right-handed quarterback in the game? Uh, yeah, I think the lefty, righty thing has, uh, you know, a little bit involved with play calling, especially, you know, play action passes, things like that when you have to turn your back on the defense and the footwork, um, you know, I think if you, you go back and look at, uh, uh, like Coach Walsh, Bill Walsh, uh, you know, he's a, a player that, that would, or, I mean, a coach that's talked a lot about that from Montana to Steve Young as an example and. And things like that, how it changed their offense, and, and I would agree with a lot of those. Fundamentally, it's the same, but there are some nuances that are a little bit different, um. Yeah, the thing with the offensive line again, as I mentioned, was just the individual personal development for each player, but also collectively how they work together as a unit and, and, um. You know, sometimes if you, if you have to make an adjustment, a player out, um, you know, do you move the player behind him ahead or do you move somebody else from another position over and move somebody up at that position where maybe it's a little more depth, things like that, maybe it's a combination of both, um, but those are the kind of things that it's, it's sure it's the 5 guys that are out there, but. Um, I know from experience that very rarely does any team play with the same five offensive linemen through the entire season. Uh, it just statistically doesn't happen very often. It's great when it does, but usually that's not the case, and I think you're probably talking about, you know, 10 to 15%. Of the NFL teams where, where you would see that it was, you know, maybe a couple of teams a year, but for the most part, everybody had to deal with some type of changes on the offensive line and, and I, and I'm sure that's true in college football too based on, you know, the time I spent scouting it. So, um, so that's what you have to be ready for. You have to be ready to put your best guys out there, um, in the best positions, but also stuff happens and then you have to be ready to adjust and, and what are those adjustments and. You know, but the, the lefty righty thing I think is it, there's some nuances to it, no doubt about it. I don't think it's dramatic though. I think you could still, you know, you run your offense the way you run your offense. Back left Yel Pat Walter from WRAL, uh, how close do you think you are to naming a starting quarterback and how would you evaluate that competition so far? Yeah, we're getting ready to do that this afternoon to announce the starting lineups and the play times and, and, uh, how we'd be substitute and everything. So, um, Brando will get that to you as soon as, as soon as we get done. We, we want to make sure we get that out there right away. Oh, if I could follow up since, uh, I, I appreciate the the tongue in cheek. Um, last time we did talk to you, you talked about moving to the evaluation stage. What have you kind of taken away from that so far? Oh yeah, there's no doubt some players have separated themselves uh from others and that's um. Excuse me. Yeah, that's a big part of what uh last week and this week really are about or or the evaluations and and the separation, who's earned playing time, uh, who's earned positions and and who hasn't. I think that, you know, will be finalized at a later point in time, but certainly it's starting to, uh, there's starting to be some separation and, and, um, you know, experience can be a big factor in that. That's always, uh, a hard one when a player who's um. Um, maybe less talented but more experienced, outperforms a player who's less experienced and more talented, and then you, you just as a coach, wonder what will happen when that less experienced player gains the experience because he has more talent and maybe more potential, um, you know, when does that, when do those lines, when those lines cross and when does the younger less experienced player, you know, overtake the other one? What's, what's the, you know, what's the timeline on that. And I'd say that's, uh, you know, a little bit of a challenge here, uh, in college football, it's just a little bit less time to make that, you know, you have the 3 preseason games in the NFL and a couple of scrimmages and sometimes that we'll start to, to declare a little bit quicker, um, you know, here, you know, we'll see how they play when they actually play in games. Um, you know, we don't have the preseason games, so we'll just see how that works out. But yeah, there's definitely some separation that's, that's occurred and um. And I, I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of things change from where we are now to a week from now, but we'll just have to see how that turns out. I can't tell you how players are gonna perform. That'll be up to them. Bill Roba's Federal observer. How would you describe the physicality you've seen so far in, in the live periods full pads and has it lived up to your own standards at this point? Yeah, you know, we've done a lot more live work here than than we ever did in the NFL at any team I was ever on, um, so that part of it's been, uh, actually an interesting thing to see, you know, some of the, the coaches that are on our staff that've had a lot of college experience, uh, have, have talked about the necessity to do that. Again, obviously without preseason games, it's, you know, it, we, we do need to do it and we've done it. Um, and so it's been good, the intensity's been good, the competitiveness has been good. I think. You know, we've really emphasized trying to, uh, practice, uh, learn how to practice and practice, um, very competitively, but at the same time, you know, taking safety into account, knowing that we're, you know, got to take care of our teammates and, and the players have done a really good job of adapting to that. Um, we, we really haven't had too many issues, um, very few injuries to deal with, um, and even though we've had quite a bit of contact, uh, in our padded days, so. Um, I think that part's been really, really good. The amount of contact that we've had with the very few guys, you know, losing any playing time at all because of it has been, has been good. Last one that I left here, uh, Grants on this side, um, there's been a lot of talk in regards to the cost of the playoff and it's expansion. information brought out a model where you can extend it 24 to 28 teams. Uh, what's your thoughts about that and are there any similarities with the expansion of the cost of? The Um, yeah, thanks. I, I think that one's, uh, kind of over my pay grade. Um, you know, I have a ton of respect for Tony, and I think Tony's done a great job as, as commissioner of the Big 10 and, and, uh, and great too in the SEC for that matter. Um, and whatever the conference, uh, commissioners and the NCAA and the college presidents decide is what they decide, um. I'm gonna kind of back out of that one, and whatever it is it is, um, I try to focus on getting our team ready to play this season and do the best I can here and um I'm not sure I know all the information and all the, uh, the, the ramifications of those decisions and how it impacts, you know, academics and college conference playoffs and everything else. WRAL is keeping an eye on the conditions at our coastal towns as Category 2 Hurricane Erin, which is currently 540 miles from Cape Hatteras, impacts the coastline. It is expected to continue northward, bringing the worst to the Carolinas on Wednesday and Thursday before turning east. The offshore storm is an estimated 500 miles wide, so its impact to the coast could be severe.
