HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C.Editor's Note: An investigation by the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner called into question whether the death of Scout (Olivia) Undercoffer was an accident or whether Scout ran into oncoming traffic. According to that report, witnesses said Undercoffer ended a conversation with some people in a stopped car, then "turned around to walk away, then immediately turned back around and allegedly ran into-towards the lanes of moving traffic."
Undercoffer's father told investigators his child was transgender, had struggled with sexuality, had suffered a recent breakup and may have had suicidal thoughts.

Holly Springs police said Wednesday evening a 14-year-old girl was struck and killed in an accident that closed N.C. Highway 55.

Holly Springs spokesman Mark Andrews said the girl, Scout Undercoffer, died while trying to cross the road. The driver of an SUV was unable to stop in time and struck and killed the victim.

No charges were anticipated against the driver of the SUV.

Holly Springs police blocked N.C. 55 in both directions near Teal Lake Drive for about two hours. Traffic was diverted from the area onto South Main Street and Ralph Stephens Road. The road re-opened to traffic after 7:30 p.m.
