HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — A man is charged in connection to the death of a woman who was killed while riding in a golf cart on Friday night.

Jeremy Rollins Martin, 43, was charged with driving while impaired on Morning Oaks Drive, in the 12 Oaks Community. Martin was a resident of the community, records show.

He was also charged with possession of an open container of alcohol in the passenger area of a vehicle.

The woman was in critical condition when emergency crews arrived and was transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries.

Police have not yet released details about how the woman died.

Holly Springs Police Chief Paul Liquorie says his department is taking note of serious incidents involving golf carts.

"Last month or so, we've had a couple of instances where people have been injured," Liquorie said. "We have responded to incidents where people have, I won't say thrown, but have fallen out of the cart on the golf course."

Liquorie encourages anyone who’s been drinking to not get behind the wheel of any vehicle, including a golf cart.

"It's not safer to drive a golf cart any more than it is a vehicle," Liquorie said. "A golf cart is an open-air vehicle, particularly when people are not wearing their seatbelts. I think that presents hazards."

Martin was out of jail as of Sunday and is not due in court until July 2. He declined to comment to WRAL News, but a neighbor who lives in the community says the woman fell out of the golf cart while riding as a passenger.

This incident is still under investigation by the Holly Springs Police Department.
