RAEFORD, N.C. — A deputy on Friday shot and killed a person in the 100 block Hickory Drive in Raeford, according to the Hoke County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were serving what the sheriff's office called "a high-risk search warrant."

Radio traffic obtained from Broadcastify shows a deputy reported shots fired and a person with a gun. It is not clear whether any of the deputies was hit by gunfire.

The sheriff's office said, "As Hoke County Deputies entered the residence, continuing to announce their presence, Hoke County Deputies encountered one armed person that did comply with commands to drop his weapon. Hoke County Deputies encountered a second armed person who did not comply with commands to drop his weapon and shots were fired."

Deputies tried to revive him, but Larry Ray Scott, 66, died on the scene.

Sheriff Roderick Virgil said those involved in the shooting Friday morning had been put on administrative leave, standard operating procedure when a law enforcement officer fires a weapon in the line of duty.

“Our immediate concerns are to support and respect the family and friends of the deceased, cooperate fully with the SBI, and provide our deputies with the services necessary to cope with this traumatic incident," Virgil said.
