History museum to mark Juneteenth with family activities Friday

The N.C. Museum of History is hosting some in-person activities to mark Juneteenth, including a reading and book signing from acclaimed children's author Kelly Starling Lyons.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The N.C. Museum of History is hosting some in-person activities to mark Juneteenth, including a reading and book signing from acclaimed children's author Kelly Starling Lyons.

The program is from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, June 18, at the downtown Raleigh museum.

During the event, you can meet members of the Battery B Second Regiment, United States Colored Troops Light Artillery Civil War reenactors. Museum exhibits will be open. And you can enjoy an author reading and book signing at 3 p.m. by Lyons, who also is the 2021 Piedmont Laureate.

Lyons will read from her book "Hope's Gift," which commemorates the passing of the Emancipation Proclamation as seen by one little girl who dreams of freedom for herself and her people. A free activity guide based on the book is available for families, according to the museum. And copies of the book will be available for purchase in the Museum Shop.

The event is free, but the museum asks for people to register. More information is on the museum's website.
