HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — A Hillsborough school named after a man who enslaved close to 2,000 people will be getting a new title.

The Orange County School Board voted on Tuesday night to rename Cameron Park Elementary School.

The school is named after Paul Carrington Cameron, who was one of the largest slave owners during the 1800s.

Cameron was also the wealthiest man in North Carolina before the start of the Civil War.

The school board is also considering renaming C.W. Stanford Middle School.

The new name for Cameron Park Elementary has not been announced yet.
