HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — Plans are in place to reinvent Hillsborough's beautiful, dilapidated historic Colonial Inn, according to officials.

Historians say the inn was built in 1838, but there's a weathered sign on the front of the building that says it was built in 1759.

Located at 153 W. King Street, the building is condemned and not up to code, and officials say it has sat empty for more than a decade.

The town got into a very heated and public feud with the former owners and, last year, a new owner -- Allied DevCorp-- snatched the property up after the town attempted to claim it through eminent domain.

Allied has submitted plans to Hillsborough to rezone the area and restore the inn. According to the plans, the developer would include a restaurant, bar, meeting and hotel services.

The new owners plan to reconstruct and restore most of what's there today, including the kitchen and dinning rooms, the lobby, the restaurant and four sleeping rooms. They also say they want to add a new two-story building with 18 rooms behind the inn with a new brick courtyard and landscaped lawn for weddings.

The Town Planning Board will consider the proposal on Thursday at 7 p.m.
