HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — Lt. Scott Nicolaysen, who has worked with the Hillsborough Police Department for the past 20 years, is retiring Sunday.

Nicolaysen was sworn in as a Hillsborough police officer in July 1999. After three years, he was promoted to investigator, then to sergeant and lieutenant in 2005 and 2015. He was recognized as Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in 2009.

Before he joined the force, Nicolaysen served as a volunteer firefighter and then a fire chief for 20 years in his hometown, New York.

“Lt. Nicolaysen is the example of what every leader should strive to be,” said Patrol Lt. Charles White, who previously served under Nicolaysen. “Not only was he dedicated to the town and the department, he was much more so to every officer ― regardless of whether they were within his supervision chain.”

“Lt. Nicolaysen has been an excellent public servant to the town and its citizens, a role model to the department, and a leader I am proud to have served with,” Police Chief Duane Hampton said. “His presence here will be missed, but his impact and contributions will never be forgotten.”

Nicolaysen will be recognized on Dec. 9 at a Board of Commissioners meeting at Hillsborough Town Hall.
