ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Tuesday that an 18-year veteran with the agency shot at a Wilmington man who was armed with a knife on Monday during a roadside safety inspection in Robeson County.

The agency said Trooper Roderick McDaniel, who is assigned to Troop B in Cumberland County, shot at 29-year-old Justin Lee Workman.

McDaniel was inspecting a commercial motor vehicle on Interstate 95 around 5:10 p.m. when Workman approached him with a knife, the Highway Patrol said.

When Workman didn’t comply with commands to stop, McDaniel fired his gun, the Highway Patrol said.

Workman was injured and was taken to a hospital.

McDaniel was placed on administrative duty during an internal investigation, per agency protocol.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is examining the incident at the request of the Highway Patrol.
