RALEIGH, N.C. — Bad press has plagued the North Carolina Highway Patrol in recent months, but that didn’t keep troopers from recruiting at the State Fair.

The patrol is trying to recruit people as young as 19. Troopers said the age was lowered from 21 because the patrol wants to attract candidates before they commit to other careers.

“A lot of people understand that we work for the public, and we aren’t trying to hide that,” said Margaret Landan with the Highway Patrol. “We are a good organization.”
