SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Officials said that a man — who was on probation after being convicted for drunk driving — crashed into a Johnston County Sheriff's deputy on Friday night. He was charged again with drunk driving, making that his fourth DWI charge.

One of the cars struck was a Johnston County Sheriff's Office lieutenant.

Both the deputy and the drunk driver were transported to a local hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.

The driver was on probation and had his license suspended permanently because of three previous driving while impaired charges, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol. His most recent charge was for March 30.

The man was charged with driving while impaired, reckless driving, driving while having a revoked license for a DWI, not wearing a seatbelt, driving without insurance and driving with an unregistered vehicle.

The name of the alleged drunk driver has not yet been released.
