A police chase ended in a crash Wednesday night in Moore County.

Authorities said Stephone Trevail Covington, 32, of Aberdeen, was driving an Audi on U.S. Highway 15-501 in Pinehurst when a state trooper attempted to stop the vehicle.

Authorities said Covington initially slowed down, as though he intended to stop, before taking off at a high rate of speed in an attempt to flee.

Officers from multiple agencies chased Covington into Southern Pines, with his vehicle reaching speeds of 110 mph, authorities said.

Authorities said Covington weaved in and out of traffic during the chase before crashing into a pine tree in the center median of Midland Road.

Covington then jumped from the car and attempted to flee on foot, but was arrested, authorities said.

Covington was examined by EMS officials at the scene, but refused to go to the hospital, authorities said.

Covington was charged with felony speeding to elude arrest, careless and reckless driving, speeding and possession of marijuana. He was being held at the Moore County Detention Center under $5,000 secured bond.
