HENDERSON, N.C. — Police in Henderson are investigating after a horse died in a shooting over the weekend.

Officers were called to Southern Avenue in Henderson at 5:15 a.m. on Jan. 23, after gunshots were reported near the Oxford Road Convenience Mart.

Police did not see any "obvious signs" of damage in the area, although Police Chief Marcus Barrow said there was evidence of "a firearm-related incident." Officers were not aware that a horse in a neighboring pasture had been shot and killed. The horse’s caretaker discovered it after sunrise.

Police say they believe the horse’s death and the shooting report are related and are following several leads. Officers say they have questioned several people of interest.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers at 252-492-1925, call the Henderson Police Department at 252-438-4141, or contact police through Facebook or Instagram.
