HENDERSON, N.C. — A Henderson man suspected of killing his former girlfriend over the weekend was apprehended Wednesday afternoon in Oxford, police said.

Javius Dante Perry, 23, faces charges of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Ilana Jones

Ilana Jones, 37, and two other people were sitting in a vehicle in the 400 block of Charles Street at about 2 a.m. Saturday when someone opened fire on the vehicle, police said.

Jones died later from her wounds.

Jones' family said she had dated Perry for three years but broke up with him because she couldn't deal with his abuse.

"He kept jumping on her, and she didn’t want to be dealing with him no more," said her mother, Marie Jones.

Last July, Perry was charged with assault on a female after Ilana Jones suffered a black eye and a busted lip. He was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday on that charge.

"Anytime you have to go to the police to keep someone away, that is serious,” Marie Jones said. "He had mentioned one time he was going to kill her, but we didn’t think he was that type of person to do that.”

Two family members were with Ilana Jones at the time of the shooting, Marie Jones said. One was grazed by a bullet, and the other was cut by broken glass.

"I want to see justice, I will take it any way it comes," she said. "Whether the police take him out, whether the streets take him out, I don’t care."
