HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. — The local community is mourning the loss of Deputy Ryan Hendrix, who was killed Thursday during a shootout with a break-in suspect.

A funeral will be held Friday for Hendrix, who leaves behind two children, ages 9 and 6, as well as his fiancée. A memorial service was held at the Henderson County Sheriff's Office on Sunday.

On Thursday, after the shooting, the Henderson County Sheriff's Office posted on Facebook, "Even in passing Ryan continues to exemplify a servant’s heart. You see, Ryan was also an organ donor. He will continue to help strangers for a lifetime, even after making the ultimate sacrifice."

The sheriff's office also said Ryan’s family wanted "everyone to know that Ryan was doing the job he was born to do and he died doing the job he loved."

Henderson County Sheriff Lowell Griffin said his office has partnered with the N.C. Police Benevolent Association to make it easy to donate to Hendrix's family.

On Thursday before 3 a.m., deputies responded to a 911 call that someone broke into a car outside a home on Bethea Drive in Hendersonville's Mountain Home community.

The caller said shots were being exchanged between the homeowner and suspects, according to deputies. When deputies arrived at the home, a suspect then started shooting at them, officials said. Deputies returned fire, killing the suspect.

Hendrix was taken to Mission Hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
