RALEIGH, N.C. — Instead of clothes, the Helping Hand Mission is looking for old computers, laptops and other technology to donate to students this year.

Usually before back-to-school, the Raleigh nonprofit asks people to donate new clothes kids can use for the school year. During the pandemic, their outreach looks different.

Wake County students this year are starting school online to limit the spread of the coronavirus in schools. That means students don't necessarily need as many new clothes or shoes this year.

Sylvia Wiggins, founder and director of Helping Hand Mission, said that there students are lacking the proper technology to begin online school. The first day of school, Aug. 17, is just days away.

Helping Hand Mission is looking for old computers, laptops and other technology to donate to students.

"Right now, the ones I talk to, they don't have nothing," Wiggins said about students in the Raleigh community.

With remote classes in session, many parents are going to be acting more like teacher's assistants.

"This year, we need something to help the parents," Wiggins said.

Wiggins is handing out resources for parents to use -- like flash cards and workbooks -- to make online learning easier for parents.

"There's always a need, there's always something -- all 12 months of the year," Wiggins said.
