BATTLEBORO, N.C. — A neighbor lent his private helicopter to the search Thursday for an Edgecombe County man who killed himself after shooting his estranged wife, authorities said.

The man, whose name hasn't been released, approached his estranged wife on N.C. Highway 97 near Battleboro and shot her, but she was able to escape and get to safety, authorities said.

Deputies responding to the shooting borrowed a helicopter from a resident in the area to locate the suspected gunman's vehicle on a wooded path. As deputies approached the vehicle, they heard a gunshot, and they found the man dead inside the vehicle of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

The woman went to a nearby hospital for treatment and is expected to recover, authorities said.

The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office said it isn't releasing many details of the case, including the exact location of the shooting, to protect the family's privacy.
