DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham County Health Department was investigating the Tuesday death of a North Carolina Central University student.

Canon Tyrell Fuller, a senior history major from Lincolnton, died Tuesday morning, but the cause of death was inconclusive, officials said.

Public health officials said they suspect Fuller might have had meningitis, but they haven't confirmed the diagnosis.

There was no word on whether other N.C. Central students were at risk of contracting the disease. A bacterial form of meningitis is contagious, while a viral form isn't.

Fuller also was a resident assistant at Campus Crossing, an off-campus dormitory.
