The mass shooting in the Hedingham community impacted the victims' families, friends – and even perfect strangers.

Some groups have organized benefits. Others have managed crowd-funding drives to honor the victims.

One Raleigh artist was inspired to try and help people heal through the power of art.

She created a portrait of one of the survivors of the shooting: A woman named Lynn Gardner, who is still in the hospital with severe injuries. Despite her chest tube and infection, Gardner is remaining positive and upbeat, using an iPad to type messages and communicate.

It's hard not to notice Gardner's brilliant smile and bright eyes – captured perfectly in a portrait created by Kyndall Owens.

When Owens showed Gardner the bright and colorful portrait, Gardner lit up. The portrait is now hanging on the wall of her hospital room.

"I heard about the shooting and it definitely impacted me, along with other Raleigh residents, just because it happened so close to home," says Owens. "So, I wanted to use my talent. I love to paint, so I wanted to just paint her and bring it to her family, to bring healing to the process."

When she learned Gardner 'lit up' upon seeing her portrait, Owens said she was thrilled. She says she just wanted to use her art to bring some positivity to her hometown.

"If I hear about a tragedy, I try to use my art to bring some healing," she says.

When she found out Gardner's birthday is October 15, just two days before her own, she thought that was a sweet coincidence. She inscribed, "Happy belated birthday!" on her painting.

Gardner's family has been providing updates about her condition on their GoFundMe, which has raised over $45,000 so far.

Owens says she's still praying for Gardner's healing and a full recovery.
