RALEIGH, N.C. — PNC Arena in Raleigh will be implement a "clear bag policy" effective with first preseason game for the Carolina Hurricanes Sept. 18.

In a statement from arena officials, the move comes as the NHL is starting to require more stringent bag and security checks.

"It doesn't matter what event you're coming to, (we want you to) just feel you're being watched out for," said Don Waddell, president and general manager for the Hurricanes.

Waddell also expects to see security lines move more quickly.

"It doesn't matter what time your show starts, 80 percent of your people show up 15 minutes before it starts," he said. "We think this will help with ingress, getting people inside the building.

PNC Arena will sell clear bags; Hurricanes season ticket holders will get them for free. At Lynn's Hallmark in Cary, bags that fit the profile are available for $26.99.

The clear bag policy is not new to the sports and entertainment industry and continues to be a growing trend across the country.

"We have some cheaper alternatives, some smaller ones," WIll Oakes says. "Not everybody is going to want the large bags."

Below are key points regarding the new policy and its implementation:

  • Starting on Wednesday, Sept. 18, the PNC Arena will be implementing a clear bag policy for all events, including hockey, basketball, concerts, family shows, etc.
  • The arena will allow plastic clear bags into the facility no larger than 12 inches x 12 inches x 6 inches. Small clutch purses and wallets no larger than 6.5 inches x 4.5 inches will also be allowed into the building.
  • Diaper bags will be allowed when accompanied by a child
  • Medical bags will be allowed on a case-by-case basis – guests should check with security
  • All bags will still be screened
