Durham woman charged with DWI in U.S. 70 wrong-way crash

CLAYTON, N.C. — A Durham woman stands accused of causing a head-on collision Saturday night on U.S. Highway 70 in Johnston County.
Keya Echols, 25, was going the wrong way on the highway near Clayton and driving without insurance, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. She ran her Honda Civic into a Toyota Camry carrying three women, sending all three to WakeMed, troopers said.
By late Sunday, the driver of the Camry had been treated and released, but her two passengers remained in the hospital, one in critical condition.
Echols, too, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, troopers said.
Update 1/25/2022: Echols pleaded guilty to DWI, but the charges of driving without insurance were dismissed.
