RALEIGH – A Raleigh man faces three counts of murder. Evan Small, 27, appeared in Wake County court, Wednesday. Small was taken into police custody after authorities found three of his family members dead, earlier this week.

Family friends said Evan Small’s sister had contacted authorities after she had not heard from her family members. Raleigh Police and Wake County deputies conducted welfare checks and found Small’s father and grandparents dead.

“The daughter started calling because she hadn’t talked to anybody in a few days and that’s when they sent the police officers out,’ said Keith Jaques a friend of the Small family.

On Monday, Raleigh officers were dispatched to the 3900 block of Bentley Meadow Lane for a welfare check. That’s when they found the body of Patricia Small, 79. The Wake County Sheriff’s Office then went to the 5600 block of Alta Vista Court, in Raleigh. They discovered Jimmy Small Jr., known as Sandy to friends, dead. Raleigh police then found Jim Small, 80, dead inside his business Hamco on Fairview Blvd.

Jaques said Sandy Small, 58, had recently bailed Evan Small out of jail. Jaques said it was in the Small family’s nature to help.

“They helped me more than once, Jim was well known around these parts. So was Sandy. They’ve been going through some hard times with the son,” Jaques said.

If convicted, Small faces life without parole or the death penalty.

“The son just couldn’t handle it and he lost it and freaked out and he’s done what he’s done, I hate it,” Jaques said.

He was convicted for several other crimes, including breaking and entering and larceny. He was most recently charged with larceny on June 16, a little less than a month before the killings.
