He got Santa's voicemails by mistake. Now, this Raleigh man is using them to help kids

For almost 10 years, Scott Chalkley's phone number has been very similar to Santa's North Pole line, 1-319-527-2680. When children looking for Santa dialed the wrong number, they would reach him.

RALEIGH, N.C. — This is a busy time of year for calls to Santa, and one Raleigh man knows it better than anyone.

Eight years ago, when he lived in Miami, Scott Chalkley started getting calls from kids looking for Santa Claus. The calls came from his hometown of Macon, Georgia.

With a Google search, Chalkley learned his number was very similar to Santa's North Pole line. When children looking for Santa dialed the hotline using Chalkley's Georgia area code, they would reach him.

"I got a little exasperated and asked a grandma who called what was happening," said Chalkley. "She apologized and said, 'Sorry, but I’ve been trying to call Santa Clause.'"

To help Santa, Chalkley would pick up when he could. He talked with the kids and encouraged them to stay on the Good List.

"I couldn’t get to all of them, so I sent a lot of them to voicemail," Chalkley said. "They started leaving me messages of what they wanted for Christmas.”

After getting over 1,000 calls, Chalkley set up a voicemail that says, “Ho, Ho, Ho, Merry Christmas. Thank you for calling the North Pole! Ho, Ho, Ho!"

One boy asked for three dogs, three fish and one cat. His sisters asked for Minnie Mouse and Mickey Mouse.

Another little boy asked for a new scooter and a coloring book.

The messages were so cute that Chalkley partnered with United Way. With Chalkley, the nonprofit created a website, "For a Good Claus," and posted the voicemails online encouraging people to donate to the Merrie Christmas Project, which helps provide food and Christmas gifts to Georgia families in need.

Since the voicemails have been online, For a Good Claus has raised over $1,000 for children in Chalkley's hometown.
