CARTHAGE, N.C. — A hazmat team responded to an incident in Moore County on Tuesday night.

The NC Hazmat Response Team confirmed they were responding to the Carthage Town Hall and Fire Station, where officials originally reported they had located a suspicious plastic bag with a possible mysterious powdery substance inside.

The response was large, with more than dozen team members responding.

The area is off U.S. 501 and several homes are nearby.

After several hours of investigating, hazmat officials determined "it was a letter" and turned the investigation over to Carthage police. Officials have not released what the letter said or why exactly hazmat was called when it was found.

This is a breaking story, and more details will be added as they become available.
