LILLINGTON, N.C. — Harnett County Sheriff Wayne Coats ordered special pink-lettered badges for his deputies to wear throughout the month of October.

The breast cancer awareness month is personal to Coats and his wife Dale, a survivor of the disease.

"I'm very blessed," she said. "And when I look at the pink badge... I think of three things on my journey, and that was support, love and prayers."

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 276,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. More than 42,000 will die

While Black women have a slightly lower chance of developing the disease, they are 42 percent more likely to die from it.

The Sheriff hopes the special badges brings awareness to everyone with whom his officers come in contact.

"It's not just about Wayne Coats or Dale Coats," he said. "It's about everybody out there. Because this disease... it does not have an age or a gender. It affects everybody."

Coats says that his deputies will wear the special badges until the end of the month.
