SELMA, N.C. — A Johnston County man's morning shakeup netted him a $2 million win in the North Carolina Education Lottery.

John Teague of Selma was on his way to work when he stopped at the Circle K on North Brightleaf Boulevard in Smithfield. Normally, Teague plays the Cashword scratch-off game. However, in this instance, he had a hunch about getting a Grand Money ticket.

“I just had this overwhelming feeling telling me to buy that ticket,” he said of the $20 scratch-off.

After scratching the ticket in his truck, Teague said he screamed at the top of his lungs. He later called his wife to tell her he won.

“I told her, ‘Now I can get you the house that you deserve,’” Teague told his wife. “This is a life-changing event.”

He wants to buy a house, pay off his truck and purchase a new lawn mower with his winnings. Teague chose the lump-sum amount of $1.2 million and, after taxes, took home $855,006.

“This really is a blessing for our family,” he said. “Hallelujah.”

Teague works as a maintenance director in Youngsville.
