WELDON, N.C. — Halifax County deputies arrested a man Monday after they saw him attempting to swallow 5.6 grams of crack cocaine, authorities said.

Around 11:30 p.m., Deputy Willie Murphy Jr. stopped a vehicle for suspected drug activity at 912 Elm St. in Weldon.

Deputy Charlie Jenkins said he then noticed Eric Powell trying to swallow something while interviewing him. Jenkins said he discovered it was cocaine.

Authorities charged Powell with possession with intent to sell manufacture and deliver a controlled substance. He was expected to appear in Halifax County court on Sept. 15.
