CARY, N.C. — For many people across the state, Saturday was their first chance to get back in the gym. The latest changes to the COVID-19 restrictions took effect Friday at 5 p.m., allowing them to re-open.

However, for locals looking for a workout – the new routine may look a little different.

Changes to gym guidelines to help prevent the spread of COVID-19

  • Gyms are now allowed to operate at 30 percent capacity
  • There are now temperature checks at the door
  • Visitors must wear their masks at all times, except when in deep workout
  • Visitors must leave an empty treadmill in between them, to space out for social distance
  • Mats are spread out in the fitness room to allow space between visitors
  • The whole facility is disinfected twice a day, with employees constantly wiping down high touch-points throughout the day

“That is a lot of extra work. But it our responsibility to show we can provide a safe facility," said James Garcia, Lifetime Fitness General Manager

Garcia said the public needs places like this right now – to provide them with an escape, and a place to do something positive with their time.

For members like Paula Stapleton, the gym is a much-needed relief after months of working out in her garage during the hot summer.

“This is my first day back," said Stapleton "I missed this place."

Garcia said the changes have been well-received so far.

For members like Stapleton, it's a great chance to stay moving and be around other people. She said, “Just makes you feel good and, you know, good to be healthy and exercising and being around people – is good for you in everyway possible.”

If gym members are looking for more safety, outside classes are available as well as individual sessions with a trainer.
