DURHAM, N.C. — Two children were injured early Monday morning after shots were fired in a Durham neighborhood.

According to officials, an 8-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy were inside a townhome at 601 McNeil Lane when shots were fired before 12:30 a.m.

The girl suffered a gunshot wound to her back, and the boy's arm was cut by shattered debris, officials said. Their injuries were non-life-threatening.

Police said it appears the home and children were not targets.

Neighbors told WRAL News they heard "a bunch" of gunshots, and a window at the home had five bullet holes in it. Police said there was a commotion in the street outside the home right before shots were fired.

"It was just loud," said a woman who lives in the neighborhood. "I was dozing off and it woke me up."

For about five years, Diane Branch has lived in the Franklin Village community.

"It's quiet," she said. "You don't expect to see a lot of police car or trouble like that."

She said she heard several gunshots.

"I quickly just got to the floor just to be safe," Branch said.

Police did not have any suspect information but said they were looking for a light-colored SUV seen leaving the scene.

A neighbor told WRAL News gunshots are not uncommon in the community. She said she plans to attend a public meeting to discuss her concerns about gun violence in her neighborhood.

The incident is under investigation. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Cpl. Brigante at 919-560-4281, ext. 29118 or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
