Gun-sniffing dog to be deployed in Streets at Southpoint mall to prevent more shootings

The dog, named Cigan, received "specialized training" through Allied Universal Security Services, the business which provides Southpoint mall its security.

"With the ability to detect firearms, the canine will patrol the center with a security officer to deter the possession of these weapons and quickly and safely resolve any detections," a press release from Brookfield Properties said.

Durham police responded to a shooting at the Streets at Southpoint on Sunday just weeks after another report of gun violence at the mall on Black Friday. Many Durham officials called for harsher security measures in the city after the Black Friday shooting that injured three people, including a 10-year-old.

Firearms are prohibited at The Streets at Southpoint and anyone who is carrying one could be removed from the property.

“We share the concerns of our community following recent incidents, which lead to the decision to implement this new security measure,” according to a statement from the mall’s senior general manager, Patrick Anderson.
