DURHAM, N.C. — Guests were forced out of their rooms for close to two hours early Monday during a fire at a Durham hotel.

Around 1:45 a.m., firefighters with the Durham fire Department responded to a call about an electrical fire in a room at the Extended Stay America at 4913 South Miami Boulevard.

According to officials, crews found smoke in room 116 and spent one hour opening walls and making sure the fire was extinguished. The guest room and a mechanical room were damaged in the process, officials said.

Guests were able to return to their rooms at 3:15 a.m. There were no injuries.

"It could have been a different story if we were sleeping," said Alex Major, one of the evacuated guests thankful for the smoke alarm.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
