Greenville, N.C. — A 77-year-old Greenville man shot one of two men who authorities say broke into his home early Wednesday.
Albert Atkinson was at home, along with a 47-year-old woman and two men, ages 55 and 59, when two men busted in the front door of their home at 217 River Road Estates around 1:20 a.m., said Christy Wallace, a spokeswoman for the Pitt County Sheriff's Office.
Atkinson got out a handgun and exchanged gunfire with an intruder carrying a black revolver, Wallace said. The men then fled.
Reginald Watson Jr., 20, of 8819 Prison Camp Road in Robersonville, later came to Pitt County Memorial Hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds to the chest and leg.
Investigators charged Watson with armed robbery and first-degree burglary. After he was released from the hospital, he was placed in the Pitt County jail. He was given a $300,000 secured bond.
Wallace said investigators are still trying to identify the second intruder.
