Greenville 8-year-old dies after getting hold of gun, shooting himself

Police were called to a home in the 1100 block of Van Dyke Street at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday for a reported shooting. Officers determined that the boy was alone in a family member's car when he got hold of an unsecured gun, and it went off as he handled it, shooting him in the abdomen.

The boy, whose name hasn't been released, was taken to Vidant Medical Center, where he died at about 5 a.m.

The shooting remains under investigation.
