RALEIGH, N.C. — The chance for thunderstorms and for localized flooding from heavy downpours continues into Monday. Storms and showers stay in the forecast through the next seven days, with about a 50-50 chance to see rain on any given day, WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said.

After a cloudy but dry day in most of the Triangle, rain returned again Sunday evening.

"Showers and storms that have been confined to our southern counties this afternoon dumped quite a bit of rain. Some of these will gradually build northward through the evening," Maze said. "Some of the rain could be heavy at times with the potential for 1 to 2 inches of rain in less than an hour's time."

A disturbance in the upper atmosphere will trigger storms that will linger into the morning commute on Monday.

The overall chance for precipitation Monday is 60 percent for Raleigh, but clusters of showers and storms could form or dissipate at almost any time of the day," Maze said.

"If you live in a flood prone area keep a close eye on the weather," he said.

The pattern sticks around through the work week, with chances for rain each day. After Monday, the showers will be more hit-and-miss, coming mainly in the late afternoons when the weather is hottest.

We'll see mostly cloudy skies and forecast high temperatures only in the mid-80s. That's about five degrees off the normal high for the beginning of August.
