BUTNER, N.C. — A Granville County man said he celebrated his $1 million lottery win by drinking a Mountain Dew.

Christopher Veasey, of Creedmoor, stopped for gas on Saturday night and decided to buy a $4,000,000 Diamond Dazzler ticket while paying inside the Smart Stop Mini Mart on Central Avenue in Butner.

“I went to pay and I just decided to get one,” he said.

Veasey scratched the ticket when he got home later that night and learned he had won $1 million.

“When I saw the ‘41’ at the top, I couldn’t believe it,” Veasey said. “I thought ‘Oh yeah! I’ve got a $1 million winner.’”

Veasey claimed his prize Monday at the lottery headquarters in Raleigh and opted to take the lump sum payment. After taxes, he took home $423,012, which he says he plans to invest.

The Diamond Dazzler ticket launched in September 2017 and lottery officials said one $4 million prize and three $1 million prizes remain.
